What is Integrated behavioral health?

Integrated behavioral health care blends care in one setting for medical conditions and related behavioral health factors that affect health and well-being. Integrated behavioral health care, a part of “whole-person care,” is a rapidly emerging shift in the practice of high-quality health care. It is a core function of the “advanced patient-centered medical home.”

TRAINING & RESOURCES

5 MINUTES TO CHANGE

Five Minutes to Change is our flagship platform of brief, evidence-based tools for behavior-change conversations in primary care—built for the five minutes you actually have, not the fifty you don’t. It starts with a foundational course in motivational interviewing, then branches into short, focused modules providers can put into practice the same day, whatever the conversation: medication adherence, substance use, or another health behavior. Each module pairs a short course with an instructional video and a printable handout for quick reference during the visit.

OPEN-ACCESS GUIDE BOOK

Essentials for Treating Behavioral Health in Primary Care: A Guide for the Primary Care Provider is a free, open-access book co-edited by our own Dr. Meredith Williamson and Dr. Danielle Terry (Guthrie Medical Group), published by Springer in 2026. Across fourteen chapters, it covers the behavioral health skills primary care providers need most—screening and risk assessment, psychopharmacology, brief behavioral interventions, and care for pediatric, peripartum, and older adult patients—with an emphasis on team-based care in under-resourced settings.

Creating the Best Care Possible

Primary care is the frontline of health care—and increasingly, the frontline of behavioral health. Yet many providers are expected to manage depression, anxiety, substance use, and other behavioral health concerns with limited training and even fewer resources. We aim to provide practical, evidence-based strategies to confidently assess and treat behavioral health conditions—whether or not there are dedicated behavioral health supports within the primary care practice. Resources developed through this program are an excellent primer on behavioral health for undergraduate and graduate medical education settings.
